I haven’t shared any news from the Banana Pi single-board computer manufacturer for a while. Now they have introduced the R4 Pro Router board. On this board, which can be used as (not only) a router, you can find PCIe, USB3.2 interfaces, and gigabit Ethernet ports. The heart of the board is the MediaTek MT7988A (Filogic 880) Quad-core ARM Cortex-A73 processor.
The Banana Pi BPI-R4 Pro is built on the MediaTek MT7988A (Filogic 880) platform, which is a quad-core ARM Cortex-A73 processor running at 1.8 GHz, designed for demanding network traffic. In addition to 8 GB of DDR4 RAM, 8 GB of eMMC flash memory, and 256 MB of SPI-NAND flash, it also allows expansion via microSD cards, providing ample space for operating systems, services, or traffic logging.
One of the biggest advantages of the BPI-R4 Pro is its support for Wi-Fi 7. The combination of 320 MHz bandwidth, 4096-QAM modulation, MLO (Multi-Link Operation), MRU, and AFC ensures fast wireless connectivity simultaneously in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands. The MediaTek Filogic 880 platform promises throughput of up to 36 Gbps.

Connectivity:
- 2× 10G SFP+/RJ45 ports (WAN/LAN, combo)
- 4× 2.5G RJ45 LAN ports
- 2× miniPCIe slots (PCIe 3.0 2lane) – ideal for Wi-Fi NIC modules
- 2× M.2 M-Key for NVMe SSD (PCIe 3.0 1lane, switchable to B-Key)
- 3× M.2 B-Key with USB3.2 (for 5G modules)
- 1× USB 3.2, 1× USB 2.0, 1× USB Type-C (Debug Console)
- 2× 13 pin GPIO headers for expansion applications.
The Banana Pi R4 Pro is an improved version of the Banana Pi R4, which is readily available for purchase.
