What to place a 3D printer in? This is an age-old question for the coexistence of a 3D printer and its wife/girlfriend. It should look nice so it doesn’t ruin the room, and at the same time, it should be practical for storing filament. Here’s one of the dozens of possible options.
3D Printer and Box in One
Nowadays, we can buy a printer with a very nice and safe box designed specifically for 3D printers. For example, the Prusa Core One or the larger type Core One L.

However, not all 3D printers come with such a nice box, and it is often necessary to buy or build one.
Box for 3D Printer and Ikea Lack
Often, furniture from Ikea is used to create such a box, especially the LACK coffee tables. You can connect two or three together and have a nice and practical box.

Ultra-Cheap Box for 3D Printer
Alternatively, you can build such a box using 3D printing, wooden beams, and foil. The result is an ultra-cheap box that protects the printer from dust. I wrote more about this box here.

Nice and Practical Box from Ikea Platsa
But back to the box that should be nice and practical. I came across the profile of user Kevin Willads Petersen on Instagram.
He built a box from Ikea furniture, which is nothing unusual, but it looks very NICE and is also very PRACTICAL.
And that Ikea furniture can also be purchased in the Czech Republic.

And the best part is, the used furniture can also be purchased in the Czech Republic.
The foundation is a pair of PLATSA frames – 60x55x60 cm and 60x55x40 cm.

For the glass doors of the larger PLATSA frame (60x55x60), SINDVIK was used.
For the smaller frame 60x55x40, opaque doors FONNES were used.
The whole box looks tasteful, and it is also practical. However, there are two BUTs.
1. BUT – Safety
Placing a 3D printer in a “wooden frame” is not very safe. Therefore, you should consider additional protection to extinguish a potential fire. See the issues with the BambuLab A1 3D printer, where the bed is powered by 230V, and over time, the power cable wore out, leading to sparking in the cable and outside it.
This issue should have been resolved, but still… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8HK79aR7GY
2. BUT – Stability
The 3D printer can achieve high head movement speeds, so the question is what the overall stability of this box for the 3D printer made from Ikea Platsa frames is. I think it will be necessary to anchor it to the wall.
Conclusion
You can find videos of the construction on Instagram from Kevin.
