Miniature relays with MOSFET output and optical coupling from Omron

The G3VM-61VY2 (60V) and G3VM-351VY (350V) relays from Omron have been upgraded with better electrical parameters and better insulation without changing their package size or pin layout.

TME‘s offer has been enriched by two new series of solid state relays from Omron Electronics ? G3VM-61VY2 (60V version) and G3VM-351VY (350V version) ? equipped with MOSFET outputs and optical coupling. These relays are general-purpose components that offer better electrical parameters and higher quality of insulation than their predecessors (G3VM-61G1 and G3VM-351G). At the same time, these new relays have the same package size and pin layout as their previous versions.

Good electrical insulation

The relays are encased in miniature SMD 4-pin SOP packages (4.55 x 3.7 x 2.1?mm) that allow for reflow soldering. Despite their small size, they ensure good electrical insulation between input and output: 3.75 kVrms with 5?mm creepage and clearance.

Parameters

Both relays have one SPST-NO contact and wide operating temperature range: from -40 to +110?C. The G3VM-61VY2 model has a?rated voltage of 60V, and allows for operation with continuous load current of 0.5?A. In this case, the MOSFET maximum output resistance is 2??. In comparison, the G3VM-351VY model with a?rated voltage of 350V has a permissible load-carrying capacity of 0.11?A and internal resistance of up to 50??. Typical internal resistance is usually two times lower.

High sensitivity and speed

These relays are characterised by their high sensitivity and speed. The trigger LED forward current is only 3?mA, and the ON/OFF times are 2/0.5 ms for the G3VM-61VY2 and 1/0.5 ms for the G3VM-351VY. This noticeably lowers the control power requirements, which is crucial for battery-powered applications. In turn, the high switching speed minimises power loss during a switch. It is important for e.g. power regulators with group control. It should also be noted that the above-mentioned components have very low leakage when switched off: less than 1??A for the maximum rated voltage. This parameter is significantly worse in many other solid state relays.

Lower capacitance

These new relay models also have lower capacitance than previous solutions. The capacitance between terminals in an OFF state is 20?pF for the G3VM-61VY2 and 30?pF for the G3VM-351VY. The previous solutions had a capacitance of 100?pF and 130?pF ? significantly higher. The capacitance between the relay’s input and output is only 0.8?pF. These low values make the components usable not only in power grid circuits, but also for higher frequency signal switching or distorted waveforms, without affecting signal crosstalk.

The consistently improving MOSFET relay technologies allow for substantial parameter changes. The above example shows that Omron follows this trend perfectly by introducing upgraded versions of their products to the market.
