Qualcomm enters the maker world: acquires Arduino and introduces UNO Q.

The tech world is buzzing today, thanks to Qualcomm. They have announced the acquisition of Arduino, the legendary platform for hobbyists and developers.

According to the official communiqué, Arduino will remain an “independent” brand with an open approach, while Qualcomm brings its expertise in computing, connectivity, and AI.

UNO Q — a new development board for the Arduino family

Included in the announcement is a brand new development module: UNO Q. This board combines two chips, a microcontroller and a processor:

– a powerful Linux processor Qualcomm Dragonwing™ QRB2210 (quad-core, graphics, AI acceleration)

STM32U585 MCU for real-time applications and peripheral control

UNO Q aims to merge the best of high-performance computing and control microcontrollers — ideal for robotics, IoT projects, or smart sensors.

The board will be available through the Arduino Store and various distributors starting October 8.

New IDE — App Lab

Along with the hardware innovation comes a new development platform, Arduino App Lab, which unifies development for real-time applications, Linux, Python, and AI into a single environment.

Developers can easily combine parts of applications running in Linux with real-time control of sensors or motors.

What to expect next

Although the financial details of the acquisition are not yet known, experts see this move as a significant shift — Qualcomm aims to get closer to the maker community and accelerate the adoption of AI and edge computing in the real world.

For Arduino, this could mean better access to powerful hardware and global infrastructure — but it will greatly depend on whether the open spirit and support for a broad ecosystem are maintained.
